Video Based Mobile Learning

Abstract:  

 
Teach your students how to create video tutorials on their mobile devices to engage in storytelling, video tutorials, and presentations. With the use of free screencasting tools that have online and offline download capabilities for desktop sharing, members of the course will be able to communicate and learn from each other more easily and in fun ways.  
Participants of the course will learn how to use Screencast-o-matic, Vimeo, Flipgrid, Padlet, LOOM, Awesome, ZOOM, Jitsi, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, and other tools to create videos on their computers and mobile devices (smart phones and tablets/iPads). They will also learn how to use various mobile tools to enhance learning by engaging them in creating videos. 
 

 


 

Target audience:

The session is suitable for teachers, students, and those who are interested in sharing information with screen sharing videos. 

 


 

Session objectives: 

 

 By the end of this session, participants will have...

  • read and annotated (PDF) articles on video-based mobile learning. 

  • discussed video-based mobile learning.

  • created videos on mobile and desktop devices.

  • created stories using video apps in mobile devices.  

  • reflected on the tools and process of video-based mobile learning in a diary (Moodle activity) 

  • scheduled and gave collaborative live online meetings using Jitsi. 

  • teamed-up and worked in teams. 

  • used curation tools to showcase activities. 

 


 

Syllabus:

 

Week 1: (January 10 - 16) Introduction

 

In week 1, participants will use Kahoot, Voki, and Knovio to introduce themselves. 

Activities:

  • Create a  Kahoot challenge based on the video presentation they created on Knovio with slides about their past, current, and possible future leisure, education, work or career-related aspirations.
  • Create an avatar or avatars using Voki and/or Bitmoji.

Week 2: (January 17 - 23) Benefits and Challenges

 

In week 2, participants will explore, learn, and discuss the benefits and challenges involved in video-based mobile learning. They will create or choose a video from YouTube and add questions to it using Edpuzzle (for mobile and desktop) to engage students as they watch the video.

  • Get a free account as a teacher on Edpuzzle 
  • Choose video from YouTube.  
  • Create an interactive lesson for the YouTube video.
  • Add questions and other activities into the YouTube video using Edpuzzle.

Week 3: (January 24 - 30) Screen Recorders

 

In week 3, participants will team up to start planning their mobile lessons using the tools for storytelling. They will create a presentation on the need for mobile learning for all ages using Canva, share the presentation using screen recording tools, and reflect on the process.

Week 4: (January 31 - February 6) Storytelling

 

In week 3, participants will create 1 - 6 stories using their mobile and/or desktop devices. They will share the stories and reflect on the process using the diary. They may work with their teams or individually or both.

Activities

  • Get a free account for each of the story building tools below if they don't have one. Get the apps and add them to their phones, iPads, or Tablets. 
  • Create videos with the tools. 
  • Reflect on the process using the Diary.

Week 5: (February 7 - 13) Showcase and Reflect

In week 5, participants will create 2 or 3 activities each, create a presentation, using their mobile and/or desktop devices. They will give the presentation in a live class to explain how they will use the activities. They may work with their teams or individually or both.

  • Create a presentation 
  • Give the presentation in a live class (ZOOM, Jitsi, Google Meet, MS Teams, GoBrunch) to explain how they will use the activities
  • Record the class and publish the recording (MP4) on YouTube or Vimeo, and share the link of the video for others to view and add their comments. 
  • Reflect on their work using a Voki avatar on their phones and adding the Voki reflection to one of the following curation boards along with other multimedia content they accumulated in the course.
