Abstract:  

 

Teaching EFL to Young Learners sessions is a hands-on session for teachers of English to Young Learners and Teens from around the world. The session will focus on activities that engage young learners. Teachers will use FlipGrid for student speaking, limited resource classroom activities, board games, and learn a storybook reading improvisational play activity. Padlet and Wakelet for collaborative reflections, and Screencast-o-matic and Vimeo to record their screens and create video tutorials.   


 

Target audience:

 

TEFL2YL is designed for teachers, parents, caregivers, and everyone involved in teaching young learners and teens irrespective of context or degree of experience. 


 

Session objectives: 

 

By the end of this workshop, participants will have: 

  • discussed challenges and activities involved in teaching EFL to young learners.
  • discussed methods of teaching young learners via Flipgrid, Videos, Arts & Crafts; Games; Improvisational Play Online.
  • created activities using Flipgrid, arts & crafts; board games; story reading/improvisational play.
  • discussed student collaboration 
  • recorded their voices using PoodLL and recorder using their audio and webcam directly from the editor 
  • added their reflections and feedback of the session on Padlet or Wakelet
  • created video tutorials using Screencast-o-matic to document their work.   

 

 

 


 

Syllabus:

 

Week 1: (January 10 - 16) 

 

Getting acquainted and learning about the session tools

In week 1, participants will

  • become familiar with the layout of this platform 
  • get acquainted with the other members of TEFL2YL EVO22
  • get acquainted with the following tools:

 

 

  • create activities based on the above tools
  • brainstorm and discuss topical issues of concern in teaching EFL to young learners around the world

 

 


 

Week 2: (January 17 - 23)

 

Upcycling Workspace: Creating Context in the TEFL  Classroom

 

 

Preparing for a "First Day": How do we improve student learning by implementing contextual expression of appropriate, individual learning?

 

Lead Moderator: Sheryl A. McCoy

In week 2, participants will:

  •  Learn how to create context in EFL learning by Upcycling, Consider and Summarize what was learned about the theory . 
  •  View examples from websites or other media, as well as describe or show what an effective Upcycling Workspace can be.
  •  Create a sample Upcycling Workspace and develop a particular learning context for EFL learning in the Moodle. Use Screen Cast-O-Matic or Vimeo to record progress.
  • Use Wakelet to feature creations, ideas, and samples.

 

Week 3: (January 24 - 30)

Games in the EFL Classroom

In week 3, participants will: 

  • Study & Comment on the Theory behind the use of Games in the EFL Classroom as a means to enhance and motivate learning the English language.
  • View various websites that provide ample Games related to learning Verbs, Adjectives, Basic Grammar structures, etc. understand how to use in the classroom.
  • Create an artifact (game, video tutorial, site, document, slideshow) of the week's activity and sharing in the moodle site for the week.

Week 4: (January 31 - February 6)

 

Bringing A Book to Life with improvisational play online!

 

Lead Moderator: Judy Wong

In week 4, participants will:

  • Discuss the challenges of keeping your students engaged online.
  • Learn how to bring a book to life with improvisational play online via Zoom.
  • Learn tips & tricks to navigate the Zoom platform and keep your students engaged.
  • Synchronously engage in an online group reading /improvisational play activity via Zoom to practice what participants learned.

 

 


 

Week 5: (February 7 - 13)

 

Wrap-up ZOOM meeting and reflections on Padlet or Wakelet or FlipGrid

In week 5, participants will showcase their work and reflect.

  • They will create videos of their work using Screencast-o-matic or FlipGrid
  • Create a Padlet wall or Wakelet 
  • Add the videos on the wall or on Wakelet.
  • Share the link of their Padlet or Wakelet with the rest of the participants.  
  • Take the final survey for EVO22
  • Fill in the feedback form for TEFL2YL.

Participants will be expected to have the basic skills necessary to facilitate communication via an online discussion group.

Sheryl McCoy, an EVO TEFL Coordinator preparing for the 2022 EVO TEFL teacher development sessions, is celebrating more than 45 years of teaching, three decades in public school settings. She holds BS and MS degrees, as well as additional courses and training in three  integrated learning areas: STEM, English Language Arts, Psychology and Social Science areas. 

Because Sheryl believes that learning belongs in the life path of students, she’s gathered a cornucopia of Special Education courses, learning, and training to help people in a positively, successful learning experience.
